]]> http://www.carolsalmanson.com/2009/10/diaphany/feed/ 0 Waiting Game http://www.carolsalmanson.com/2009/10/waiting-game/ http://www.carolsalmanson.com/2009/10/waiting-game/#comments Wed, 21 Oct 2009 20:41:07 +0000 CarolSalmanson.com Administrator http://www.carolsalmanson.com/?p=396 This Finalist’s Proposal, for Denver’s RTD, is a light show for those times when commuters wait for their train while trains moving the other way come and go.  Before the train going the “wrong” way arrives, panels of various colors of reflective sheeting mounted to the station columns catch the ambient light.  As it pulls in, hidden colored lights beam onto the sheeting and create many hues and blends of glowing, pulsating light to create delightful entertainment in place of frustration. “WAITING GAME” Finalist’s Proposal, Louisiana Station Percent-for-Art (rapid transit station), Denver, CO October, 2005 There will be times when each and every commuter will be late and waiting for a train, watching in frustration as trains moving the other way come and go. This proposed project would create a light show for those moments, a kind of consolation prize. I have recently been working with an especially high intensity prismatic reflective sheeting that glows as it reflects light from certain angles. The five columns on either side of the Louisiana Avenue platform’s staircase would have recessed colored LEDs hidden in channels, which beam colored light onto the sheeting. Each column will have a sensor on both sides. As trains pulls into the station, detectors will sense their motion, switching on the lights on the opposite side of the staircase. As they leave the station, the lights turn off. When there are no trains in the station, the sheeting will pick up both daylight and the lights overhead as riders walk along the platform. “Waiting Game” would create a visually logical pattern of five colors. The LEDs that turn on when trains arrive would be hidden in channels on both the right and left edges of each column. Each column’s lights will be of two different colors, creating a three colored effect when combined with the color of the prismatic sheeting itself, for a shimmering, glowing effect. As travelers wait for their trains, they‘ll no longer stare blankly into the distance. Instead, a moment of quotidian frustration will become a theatrical experience, a waiting game.

Different colors of LEDs were aimed into stainless steel and then beamed through prism rods for a jewel-like effect. The walls of the elevators amplified the effect of the blended lights to create an unexpectedly magical, other-worldly environment.
