ARTIST STATEMENT
My work with light combines spatial and color concerns with architectural and theatrical elements. I use a multiplicity of means, employing optics along with various lighting technologies, different kinds of reflective and refractive materials, and diverse structures to simultaneously contain and disseminate light. I focus on both object and space so I can go beyond light, by exploiting walls and other surfaces as well as the space that surrounds the work, to amplify perception-shifting effects. The materials I use are industrial, to contrast their durability with the fleeting nature of light.
The work is about the intricacies of human interaction, which I learned to carefully observe in order to compensate for a hereditary hearing problem. Like theater at its best, when a play captures the hidden structure of those intricacies and is no longer about the words, the work is about the energy embedded in subconscious perceptions and calculations, the things you see and know without realizing it. Information intersects with emotions to create a specific kind of knowledge that is nonverbal, precise, and intense.
